Indian village: It was best said by the tribe chief of an Indian tribe in Seattle, when he answered the president of the USA in 1854 on why he would not sell his village and here is a part of that answer:
"How is it possible to buy and sell the blue sky and warmth of the soil? This, to us, is completely foreign. This land is sacred. The rivers are our brothers, they calm our thirst. The rivers carry our canoes, they feed our children. If we sell you this land, you have to offer the rivers the goodness you would offer your brother. We know the white man does not understand us. He is a stranger, who comes in the night and takes from the land everything he needs. This land is not his brother, it is his enemy. When he subjects this land to his needs, he moves on. I do not know. Our way of life is different from yours. When seeing your cities, the red man has sore eyes. In the cities of the white man, there are no calm places, where you can hear the leaves blossom in the Spring, or the tremble of a flies wing. Animals. What would a man be without animals. If there were no animals, man would die of a lonely spirit. Whatever happens to animals, will soon happen to man. Everything in the world is connected. If man spits on the soil, he spits on himself. The soil does not belong to man, man belongs to the soil. As a family is connected by blood, everything else is connected. Man is not the maker of the texture of life, he is merely a fiber in it!”
